Coffee Break - Discover Something New on the Weekend

Walking at the Dandenong Wetlands

As local residents, over the years we have visited numerous parks and reserves in Greater Dandenong, but never had the chance to visit the Dandenong Wetlands.

The weather was perfect on Sunday, so a new walk sounded perfect. I knew the vicinity of the Dandenong Wetlands as I’ve crossed over Heatherton Road many times but couldn’t figure out where to park. I got straight onto the Greater Dandenong website, and it gave me all the answers I needed about parking (awesome up-to-date information from the website team!). I discovered that we could park at the back of the Dandenong Basketball Stadium. I've been to the stadium so many times for the kids basketball and never knew that I could park behind the stadium.

The family toddled off with Rusty, our Jack Russell, and a football in hand. We had a fantastic walk, reaching Heatherton Road on the shared path with many people out enjoying the sunshine. We walked around the creek to spot some bird life and played some football on the grass area. We had a wonderful afternoon, and it was great to shut off our devices and be outside in the fresh air.

Thanks to the wonderful Parks team for providing such a great open space. The wetlands looked beautiful.

I hope my family will continue to go on adventures and discover something new again. Why don’t you challenge yourself and your family to do something new this weekend - discover a new walk, visit a new park, enjoy a coffee on the park bench or just sit and enjoy the sunshine.

Whatever you do, have fun discovering the outdoors.

For the locals

Did you know you can use our website to find the right 'adventure' for your family? We are continuously working with the Parks and Sport and Recreation team to update and add parks and facilities information for the community.

If you visit our Parks and Reserves page you'll find a range of filters (type of open space, specific facilities, playground type and suburb) that you can use to narrow your search. For example, if you're a Dandenong local like Sia, in search of a park with a picnic area, you'll find 5 options.

A thought from a book

Matt Haig (The Comfort Book)

Yes, sure, it is comfortable to be on the inside. Sheltered, protected. But there is a comfort to the outside too.

Because outside is freedom.

Outside you can keep moving until you find a place of your own. Or you can decide that outside is your place. And stay there.
