Working as One Greater Dandenong: Walker Street Carpark Lift Replacement

Thumbs up and clapping

After many years of service, the lift on the multi-deck carpark on Walker Street was reaching the end of its life and had become increasingly unreliable.

While the decision to replace it was straightforward, what really mattered was how we delivered this project for our community.

With only one lift servicing the carpark, taking it out of action for around six weeks had the potential to create challenges, especially for people with mobility or accessibility needs. That’s where the strength of One Greater Dandenong came to the fore.

This project wasn’t just about installing a new lift. It was about making the process as smooth as possible for carpark users. Multiple teams worked together seamlessly, with a shared focus on minimising disruption and supporting those most affected.

From Building Projects managing the installation and coordinating with Building Maintenance, Transport and Civil Development, Parking Compliance, Customer Service and Infrastructure Services to help manage the impact – the collaboration across Council was outstanding.

Thanks to this collective effort, the lift replacement went ahead with limited disruption to the community. Proactive communication, clear signage and practical support options all helped carpark users navigate the temporary change.

Now, the new lift is in place and fully operational, providing reliable and accessible service for all who use the carpark.

This project shows that something as simple as a reliable lift – often taken for granted – can have a big impact and by working as One Greater Dandenong, we’ve delivered an outcome that makes everyday life easier for our community.
