What to expect at Emergency Relief Centre Training

Emergency People

When emergencies strike—whether it’s a storm, flood, or fire—Emergency Relief Centres (ERCs) become critical temporary refuge for our community. These centres provide shelter, food, and essential services to those affected. But their success depends on the readiness and capability of the people who run them.

That’s why Greater Dandenong City Council is delivering a comprehensive ERC training and exercise program. If you’re interested, here’s why you should get involved.

Training will be delivered in line with our ERC Plan and Standard Operating Procedures, followed by the development of a workable roster to ensure smooth operations during emergencies.

This is as close to real-life as possible you’ll participate in a hands-on exercise to simulate the opening of an ERC. You’ll:

  • Set up the centre
  • Coordinate logistics
  • Prepare for the arrival of community members needing immediate relief

The Salvation Army will have their food truck on site to feed you - just like at an emergency event.

The Cardinia Shire Council Activation Trailer will be on site, so you can explore the equipment you'll be using if deployed to assist them.

You’ll be working alongside key emergency support agencies, including:

  • Salvation Army
  • Red Cross
  • Victorian Council of Churches Emergencies Ministry
  • Department of Families, Fairness and Housing
  • Emergency Recovery Victoria
  • Victoria Police
  • St Johns Ambulance

Why this training matters

Recent emergencies have shown how critical ERCs are in helping communities recover. But before an ERC can be activated, staff must be trained and confident in their roles.

Participating in this training ensures:
•    You understand your role and responsibilities
•    Plans and procedures are tested and refined
•    The community receives timely and effective support

This is more than just training—it’s a chance to make a real difference when it matters most.
