Walk in My Shoes - A Day with Local Laws

Sanjay and Caroline with dumped waste

On Thursday 10 April, I had the opportunity to walk in the shoes of Caroline Bernardo, Senior Local Laws Officer from the Community Amenity team.

We explored and discussed numerous issues, particularly focusing on dumped rubbish and hard waste collections. We also talked about the use of covert cameras to monitor illegal dumping activities

During our time together, we visited a homeless couple and a large homeless camp, which was a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by some members of our community. We also drove through industrial areas that are notorious for unregistered vehicles, highlighting the need for ongoing vigilance in these areas. I must say, the team’s effort must be paying off, as it was difficult to find an unsightly property during my inspection which is very encouraging to see.

In addition to these activities, we sent some shopping trolleys off for collection and located a large illegally dumped rubbish pile along the roadside. We investigated and taped it off for collection.

After all the hard work, the clock on the tree reminded us that it was time for lunch and to get back to the office!

I’d like to thank Caroline for her time. Her passion for this work and depth of knowledge were evident throughout the day. Caroline’s dedication to improving our community and her expertise in handling various issues related to community amenity were truly inspiring.
