Seeking Expressions of Interest - Citizenship Ceremony Assistant

a person holding a Citizenship certificate and an Australian flag

Governance currently conducts Citizenship Ceremonies once or twice a month on a Wednesday night on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs and is currently looking for extra staff to be able to assist from 4pm-9pm on a rotational basis with paid overtime.

Citizenship ceremonies are the final step in the journey for many members or our community to becoming an Australian Citizen. Candidates at each ceremony are required to pledge their loyalty and commitment to Australia and its people and is a significant occasion for our newest Australians as they are officially welcomed as Australian citizens.

The ceremonies are held predominately at the Springvale City Hall and on occasion the Dandenong Civic Centre and usually commence at 4pm, so the ability to commute between the two locations is essential.  It is also essential that you ensure you have pre-approval from your Team Leader/Manager if your working hours conclude at or after 4pm.

The main duties you will be required to perform are:

  • Ushering Candidates to their seats
  • Providing direction and assistance during the ceremony
  • Taking photos of the candidates receiving their certificate of Australian Citizenship
  • Assisting with registration of the candidates before the ceremonies (excellent computer skills are essential)

You will be on your feet for the duration of the ceremonies, so the ability to stand for long periods is required. Please be aware that each ceremony generally includes around 150 candidates, along with their guests. Staff supporting these events should be comfortable working in large, busy environments and engaging with significant numbers of attendees.

If you are interested in being part of this unique ceremony and learning more about how Council conducts its Citizenship Ceremonies, please send through an expression of interest to katharine.lang@cgd.vic.gov.au by Friday 24 October 2025.
