Employee induction or orientation is the process of introducing a new employee to Council and their new role. A good induction program will:
- Take care of the administrative processes needed to get the employee registered on payroll, IT systems and the like
- Ensure the new employee quickly becomes familiar with our REACH values and expectations of staff
- Clarify the duties and work requirements of their new role
- Introduce the new employee to their team members and members of the Executive team
- Take them through essential workplace health and safety training to ensure they can safely perform their duties in the workplace
- Ensure the new employee knows how to operate the technology or machinery required in their role.
High turnover can often be linked back to a poor initial induction process so it is critical that all new Council employees are given a great introduction and this is why Council has a compulsory induction program.
What follows is a range of templates and resources to guide and assist supervisors through the induction process.
Induction checklists
Induction checklists guide you through a typical induction program. We have induction checklists available for -

- Students/Work Experience/Work Placement Induction Checklist - 60.2 KB
- Trainees/Apprentices Induction Checklist - 61.5 KB

- Executive Team Induction Checklist - 170.5KB
The checklists are not all-inclusive and should be modified according to local needs. This is really important and will assist the new team member quickly adapt to the local work environment.
At the conclusion of the six- month Qualifying Period (often referred to as the Probation period) when all induction activities also conclude, return the completed induction checklist to Organisational Development for saving in Objective.
New team leader, manager and executive induction
Executive, Managers and Team Leaders have additional responsibilities and therefore have some additional induction requirements and documentation.
This includes briefing or training them in relevant corporate systems and useful Council information.
Re-induction of staff returning from an extended absence
If you are absent from work for an extended period of time, you will be required to participate in a re-induction session. This will provide you with an opportunity to learn about any changes which may have been introduced during your absence and provide you with a refresher on the key elements of your role. It is also important that you participate in the re-induction to ensure you receive important safety training on plant and equipment and tasks.
Your team leader and you should document what topics are covered and place this on your personnel file in Objective for future reference.
Although you may have received regular updates and information during your absence through the Keep-in-Touch scheme this should not replace a formal re-induction.
Corporate and local induction programs
Council's Corporate Induction Program is compulsory for all new employees and is an addition to any local induction that may be organised.
Bookings for Corporate Induction and the Bus Tour can be made via Pulse Learning. Corporate Induction involves meetings with the CEO, Directors and other key people, while the Bus Tour provides staff with an opportunity to visit key sites and places of interest within our municipality.
